The DoE continues to receive reports of people feeding wild sea turtles.
Feeding wild sea turtles does plenty of harm and NO good!
Here’s why:
While feeding sea turtles may seem harmless, it disrupts their natural foraging behavior posing serious risks to their health and survival.
Turtles fed by humans lose their fear of people and boats—putting them at higher risk of boat strikes and poaching.
Hand-fed turtles may stop foraging naturally, which can lead to malnutrition or even obesity resulting in buoyancy issues.
Feeding can make them aggressive. Turtles being fed may become demanding and even dangerous. Their strong jaws can cause serious injuries.
PLEASE protect our native wildlife and do not feed wild sea turtles!
Report turtle feeding to the Department of Environment’s Chief Conservation Officer at 916-4271.
Let’s keep our sea turtles wild!
