The green iguana culling program has been active in Grand Cayman since 2018 with 1.7 million green iguanas removed since November 2018. The population has stabilised at 80-100 K per annum. Green iguanas can have 30-80 eggs per clutch depending on their age so the population is dominated by hatchlings which generally emerge between August and December but can hatch throughout the year.

Program info:

• Cullers must:
  • Be over 18 years old and register with the program manager.
  • Undergo any necessary training and licensing at their own cost if they wish to use an air rifle.
  • Always obtain permission to access private property.
  • Agree to achieve cull target quota.
  • Capture or shoot and retrieve green iguanas by hand, noose, snare, trap, trained dog or firearm.
• Iguanas must be culled without delay in a humane manner and prevent unnecessary suffering.
• Iguanas may not be contained and transported alive.
• Iguanas must be delivered in a timely manner by the culler with their culling ID card presented to the cull manager or representative to be recorded for payment.
