Suspect apprehended with 70 conch taken from Marine Park

A male suspect was arrested last Monday after a Department of Environment Conservation Officer found him in possession of 70 conch which had been poached from the Marine Protected Area in Barkers, West Bay. The suspect will also be charged with assault of an officer after he threw a large rock at the DoE Officer in pursuit which resulted in injury. A second suspect has been warned for intended prosecution and further investigation is in progress. Anyone with information relating to this incident, or to report suspicious activity in progress, may contact the DoE on 916-4271.

The seized conch was unfortunately already removed from the shell so it was donated to Meals on Wheels.

The public are reminded that while conch and lobster season is currently open, it is illegal to harvest conch or lobster from the Marine Reserves or Line Fishing Zones. A maximum of 5 conch per person or 10 conch per boat and 3 lobster per person or 6 per boat are allowed to be taken per day.

Lobster season ends February 28th and Conch season ends April 30th.
