Blue-winged Teal

Length 38-40cm (15-16″). A common winter visitor to the Cayman Islands. Large numbers arrive Aug-Nov, overwintering until Mar-May, when they return to North America. Blue-winged Teal prefer wetlands habitats, freshwater ponds and lagoons. They are able to launch themselves straight upwards from the water’s surface when disturbed – earning them the nickname “springing duck”.
