Loggerhead Kingbird (Tom Fighter)

Length 24-26cm (9.5-10″). Common breeding resident on Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac, however it would appear that the breeding population on Little Cayman is now extirpated. Our local subspecies, Tyrannus caudifasciatus caymanensis is endemic: found only in the Cayman Islands and nowhere else in the world. Adaptable, Loggerhead Kingbirds are found in all habitat types, including urban areas. They are highly territorial; aggressively defending their breeding territory, and swooping down on intruders with loud calls. Not to be confused with our similar, summer visitor, Gray Kingbird.
