Length 38-43cm (15-17\”).A rare casual visitor to the Cayman Islands, often in the wake of stormy weather. Prefers marine sounds, mangrove lagoons and lakes. Distinctive beak and foraging flight make this bird unmistakable. The lower mandible is longer than the upper, and extremely narrow. This adaptation enables the Skimmer to fish by flying low over the water, dragging the lower tip of its beak through the surface. Small fish are detected by touch, and instantly snatched up.
