Length 56-71cm (22-28″). Fairly common resident, winter visitor and passage migrant. A rare breeder in the Cayman Islands, with only one record of breeding on Grand Cayman and one for Little Cayman. Prefers mangrove, wetlands, ponds, Ironshore and waterlogged grassland. Commonly associates with Snowy Egret.
