Snowy Egret (White Gauldin)

Length 51-71cm (20-28″). Common breeding resident and winter visitor to the Cayman Islands. Prefers mangrove, wetlands, ponds, Ironshore and waterlogged grassland. A large (1000+) colony was established in the mangrove fringing North Sound. In the breeding season, Snowy Egrets develop an ornate plumage of curved white feathers on the neck, breast and back. Not to be confused with the more squat and stocky Cattle Egret.
