Barn Owl (Screech Owl)

Length 30-43cm (12-17″). Uncommon breeding resident on all three islands. Nocturnal habit, taking rats, mice, lizards and birds. Silent flight. Prefers open woodland, coastal habitat, urban and disturbed areas. Takes its name from its adaptability in utilizing man-made structures for nesting. In the wake of hurricane Ivan, many moved into damaged roof spaces. Barn Owls have excellent low-light vision. Their round face disk assists in channelling sound towards their ears, which are vertically offset, to assist in pinpointing the precise origin of the sounds of their prey.
