The Department of Environment operates a small Terrestrial Resources Unit, which deals with the protection of terrestrial biodiversity in the Cayman Islands, on behalf of the Cayman Islands Government.
Our work includes:
- Establishing and managing terrestrial protected areas
- Protection of native flora and fauna
- Developing and implementing Species Conservation Plans
- Monitoring and research on priority species and habitats
- Implementation of terrestrial aspects of the National Conservation Law
- Maintaining scientific collections (insectarium, herbarium etc)
- Partnering with visiting scientists, local and international institutions, and volunteers
